Spousal Sponsorship Canada Visa

The Government of Canada is strongly committed to keeping families together.

The spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner may be sponsored to immigrate to Canada as a permanent resident by Canadian citizens and permanent residents. The Sponsor must sign a contract with the Canadian government pledging three years of financial support for the sponsored spouse. In comparison to other visa applications, the spouse visa process provides a higher degree of flexibility because there are no rigid requirements for educational attainment, language proficiency, or employment experience.

Once granted spousal sponsorship, the spouse is allowed to reside, work, and establish a permanent residence in Canada.

The standard prerequisites are:

A Canadian citizen or someone with a Canada PR visa may sponsor their spouse.
Both the sponsor and the partner they are supporting must be at least 18 years old.
If the sponsor wants to meet the requirements given by Citizenship and Immigration, Canada, they must provide evidence of the validity of the relationship.
The sponsored partner must not have any outstanding warrants.
Within the previous five years, the spouse shouldn't have been invited to Canada as a sponsored spouse.
If sponsored when immigrating to Canada, the sponsor must have completed five years of sponsorship before sponsoring the spouse.

A spouse is a lawfully wed partner who may or may not share the same sex.
Common-law partners are couples who have been in a committed relationship for at least a year uninterrupted. Likewise, a common-law spouse may be a member of either sexes.
Conjugal partners are people who, for reasons beyond their control, are unable to cohabitate but nonetheless meet the requirements for spousal or common-law sponsorship, such as having been in a committed relationship for at least a year. Conjugal partners may either be of the same sex or the opposite sex.
